Description

Store the sacred. Honour the ritual.

This vintage glass storage jar from the 1930s–50s is a vessel for the things that matter most: dried blue lotus, ceremonial cacao, your favourite herbs, or a blend you're saving for the right moment.

THE STORAGE JAR

This jar has survived nearly a century. 😍

This piece is offered as a decorative and ceremonial object — a vessel for dried botanicals, sacred herbs, or ritual ingredients. It is not recommended for airtight storage or food preservation.

The rubber seal and metal clip are no longer present, as age has worn them down, making them non-functional, which is common for jars of this age.

What remains is the glass itself: intact, embossed, and full of history.

Purchase it as part of the Nia Alchemist Collection, you get a curated 70’s Alchemist’s set, alongside the vintage teapot and coffee cups — objects that slow you down and invite intention into the everyday.

THE STORY - IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS

It’s History : A Piece of European socio-economic history from the Era: 1920s to 1950s

This lid dates back to the 1920s–1950s. During these decades—marked by the Great Depression, World War II, and post-war shortages—home food preservation was not a hobby; it was a critical survival strategy. Families relied heavily on canning vegetables and fruits from their own gardens to ensure they had enough food to get through the winter.
Competition with WECK
During the golden age of home canning, glass factories across Germany and neighboring European countries faced fierce competition. The undisputed market leader was WECK (famous for its strawberry logo).

To compete, alternative glass manufacturers launched their own brands with strong, reliable-sounding names. The brand "Welt" (meaning "World" in German) is a perfect example. By naming their line "Welt," the manufacturer aimed to convey a sense of world-class quality, unyielding durability, and universal trustworthiness to the consumer.
The Imagery: Atlas
The embossed logo in the center features the Greek mythological Titan, Atlas. According to legend, Zeus condemned Atlas to hold up the celestial sphere (often depicted as the globe/world) on his shoulders for all eternity.
This specific imagery was carefully chosen for two main reasons:
  • Literal Connection: Atlas holds up the world, perfectly matching the brand name "Welt."
  • Metaphorical Meaning: It symbolized the immense pressure, strength, and vacuum-tight seal that the glass could withstand during the boiling and preservation process. It visually reassured housewives that their stored food was completely airtight, safe, and protected by Herculean strength.
As refrigerators and deep freezers became standard household appliances in the late 1950s and 1960s, the necessity for intensive home canning declined. Most of these competing regional glass brands vanished from production, making this survivor a unique vintage collectible today.

How They Were Crafted (The Glassmaking Process)
This vintage jar was manufactured using automated glass-blowing machinery in one of the early 20th-century German factories:
  1. The Melt: Sand, soda ash, and limestone were melted in massive, coal-fired furnace tanks reaching temperatures up to 1500°C (2700°F).
  2. The "Blow and Blow" Machine Mold: A molten glob of glass (gob) was dropped into a preliminary metal mold to form the rim. Mechanical air pressure then blew the glass into the final outer mold shape.
  3. The Embossing: The text "WELT CONSERVENGLAS" and the globe logo were engraved in reverse into the steel base of the mold. When the molten glass expanded against the walls, it pressed into these crevices, cooling to leave a crisp, tactile relief.
  4. Annealing (Lehr Oven): The finished hot jar passed through a long, cooling tunnel called an annealing lehr. Slowly lowering the temperature relieved internal stress in the glass, ensuring it would not shatter during home canning sterilization.

Other Traces of The Time Period

Based on the molded fraction shown on the bottom of the glass, this jar can be estimated to date from the 1930s to the 1950s.
  • The Molded "1/2": This large, embossed fraction stands for 1/2 Liter (500 ml). In early to mid-20th century European glass production, capacities were regularly molded onto the base or shoulder in bold fractions like 1/2 or 1/4.
  • The Typography Connection: the phrasing "WELT CONSERVENGLAS"with a 'C' targeted the Dutch and Belgian export markets. During the interwar period (1920s-1930s) and the post-WWII rebuilding era (late 1940s to 1950s), the factory utilized heavy, deeply engraved base molds that featured oversized capacity numbers directly in the center to make sorting easier for consumers.
  • Glass Thickness: The prominent, thick glass ring surrounding the fraction is typical of semi-automated and early fully-automated machine molds from this era, designed to prevent cracking during intensive pressure sterilization.
