Description

Some objects don't belong in a kitchen cabinet.
They belong on the coffee table. Next to your Vogue Magazines, as the piece of art that it is.

This is that object.

A single coffee cup for you morning cappuccino- in deep amber stoneware — the kind of piece that is the conversation the moment someone enters the room.

Chunky. Architectural. Unapologetically bold. The square handle alone is a design statement. The glaze does the rest.

Burnt gold. Liquid amber. A surface that shifts with every angle of light — matte where the kiln held back, glossy where it let go. This is what happens when fire meets de-sign.

Luxury in the morning. A shot of coffee and a shot for your content styled on next to a magazine. Artistic and beautiful.

THE STORY - IT’S IN THE DETAILS

From what we can trace back , the orange and brown cup and saucer have a rich background rooted in the bold, experimental design movements of West Germany and Scandinavia during the late 1960s and 1970s.

The Glaze: Volcanic Drip & Reactive Textures
The glaze on this piece is an iconic example of the "Fat Lava" or reactive drip glaze era, known for its intense contrast and tactile finish.
  • The Electric Orange: The bright, fiery orange body was achieved using uranium oxide or cadmium-based pigments, which became highly popular in post-war European design to inject vibrant color into everyday life.
  • The Scorched Rim: The dark brown, almost black, textured border along the rim and base was created using a thick, reactive slip or manganese glaze. When fired in the kiln, this heavier dark glaze ran down and bled into the bright orange layer, creating a scorched, organic transition. No two pieces ever cooled down with the exact same pattern.

The Origin: The Powerhouses of Retro Pottery
While this look define a whole generation, its precise shape, slight pedestal base, and smooth gradient narrow the origin down to a few definitive retro producers:
  1. West German Art Pottery (Ceramics): Dozens of factories in West Germany—such as Scheurich, Carstens, or Bay Keramik exported these “fat lava” volcanic-looking sets to neighboring countries, especially across the Netherlands and Belgium.
  2. Höganäs Keramik (Sweden): The Swedish pottery house Höganäs produced a world-famous "Sierra" and related stoneware lines in the 1970s. Their signature style combined these exact deep ochre-oranges with thick, dark, rustic rims, defining the warm Scandinavian modern kitchen look.

The Story: Optimism and Cosmic Inspo
This vibrant set tells a story of technological optimism, space-age fascination, and a complete shift in home aesthetics:
  • The Space Age Influence: The late 1960s and early 1970s were dominated by the Moon landing and space exploration. Designers were obsessed with cosmic textures. This glaze style was intentionally made to look like satellite images of distant planets, bubbling solar flares, or molten volcanic rock.
  • Injecting Joy into Everyday Rituals: After the gray, austere post-war rebuilding era, the 1970s brought an explosion of color. Breakfast and coffee times were transformed into joyful rituals. People wanted bold, loud table settings that stood out on their dark teak or pine wooden tables.
