Some rituals deserve a vessel worthy of them.

This small coffee/ double espresso cup is crafted in rich tortoiseshell glaze, where amber, cognac and deep mahogany swirl together like liquid gold caught in afternoon light.

The organic speckled finish makes each piece entirely one of a kind. No two are the same. Just like you.

Pair it with your morning ceremony. Your journaling ritual. Your first quiet moment before the world begins.

Because the way you start your day is sacred.

THE STORY - IT’S IN THE DETAILS

  • The Story Behind The Glaze
  • The glaze on this tableware is known for its high-gloss, marbled effect that mimics burr walnut wood or tortoise shell.

  • The Mottled Effect:
This organic pattern was created through a chemical reaction inside the kiln. Metal oxides—typically iron and manganese dioxide—were mixed into the liquid glaze. During the firing process at high temperatures (around 1000°C), these minerals melted, ran, and clumped together at different rates. Because of this unpredictable flow, no two cups are exactly identical.
  • The Horizontal Band: The lighter, beige-brown band near the rim was applied intentionally before firing, either by hand with a brush or on a spinning wheel using a sponge. This served as a visual anchor to balance the wild, organic structure of the mottled glaze.
  •

The Story behind the time period:

While this style of robust café ware was produced by several European manufacturers, the specific angular shape of the handle and the thickness of the earthenware narrow it down to two main historical sources:
    1. Pruszków (Poland): There is a high probability this set originates from the Polish ceramics factory Zakłady Porcelitu Stołowego "Pruszków". In the 1970s, they produced an immensely popular, durable tableware line in these exact warm caramel and chestnut brown tones. It became a massive export hit across Western Europe, especially in the Netherlands, Germany, and the UK.
    2. French or West German Bistro Ware: Factories in France (like Revol) and West Germany manufactured highly similar, sturdy stoneware. It was designed to bring the cozy, informal atmosphere of French bistros directly into everyday family homes.

The Story behind the style: A Rebellion Against Tradition
This cup tells the story of a major cultural revolution in European households during the post-war era:
    • The Rejection of Formal Porcelain: Before the late 1960s, families traditionally used delicate, white porcelain sets adorned with fine floral patterns and gold rims for special occasions. The younger generation of the 1970s rebelled against this stiff formality. They demanded warmth, comfort, and an informal lifestyle.
    • The Earthy Aesthetic: The choice of deep earth tones—brown, beige, and ochre—perfectly aligned with the 1970s "back to nature" movement. People wanted objects that felt handmade, rugged, and real, looking as if they were pulled straight from the earth.
    • Bringing the Café Home: Because this earthenware is thick, it retains heat exceptionally well. This period coincided with the rising popularity of drip-filter coffee and experimental herbal teas, making these heavy, comforting mugs the perfect companion for long, slow conversations around the kitchen table.
